Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is a disease
in which the macula, the centre of the retina,
deteriorates due to age, genetics, toxicity,
inflammation, and other factors,
resulting in reduced vision and, in severe cases,
complete loss of vision.
Decreased ability to distinguish shapes of objects.
Objects look squashed.
Lines appear curved, such as tiles
or center lines in the bathroom.
When reading a book or newspaper,
there are spaces between letters.
Contrast (the ability to distinguish colors, light and dark)
is reduced
Look at the Amsler grating in bright light
while wearing your usual glasses or contact lenses.
Cover one eye and look at the circular dots
on the grid from a distance of about 30 cm.
Fix your gaze on the round dot in the center
and try to remember how the lines look.
Examine the other eye in the same way.
If the lines look wavy, the round dot in the centre is hard to see, the middle of the line looks broken,
or one area looks cloudy or squashed, you may have macular degeneration and should see your Eye clinic immediately.
